Predecessor project FNEWS
The externally funded project FNEWs successfully developed a national remote sensing-based monitoring system for forest damage between 2020 and 2023. In close collaboration with the project consortium, which is firmly established in the fields of technology, remote sensing, economics, and applied forestry research, the methodology of the monitoring system was developed and a technical infrastructure was established for four test areas. This laid the foundation for a largely automated system to identify and map forest areas killed by biotic and abiotic damage events.
